In 2020, the leading internet speed testing website and application Ookla ran a global speed index to test the average speed of internet connection in different countries around the world.

In Australia, it showed that the average download speed is at 58.83mbps while the upload speed average is at 21.44mpbs for fixed broadband connection. These averages put Australia in 61st place with the fastest internet connection.

The mobile internet speed however is a different narrative. Having an on-the-go lifestyle especially those who are living in the urban areas, the mobile download speed is at 112.68mbps while the upload speed is at 16.98mbps; placing Australia in the top 10 with the fastest mobile speed connection.

With that kind of speed at everyone’s hands, Australia is a  heavy user of different social media websites or platforms. Let’s see the analytics as of March 2021.

Analytics

  • 79.9% or 20.5 million of Australia’s population have active social media accounts
  • 96.4% of internet users use social media and messaging apps or websites on a regular basis
  • 52% of Australians rely to social media to keep up with news and current affairs
  • On average, Australians spend 1 hour and 46 minutes everyday on social media websites and applications

While these numbers are useful to know, the real question is how social media can help tradies such as plumbers and electricians grow their business. For most trades businesses, social media should form an essential component of your marketing strategy, so we have listed below some of the reasons why you should take your social media game seriously.

  • Reach and Awareness

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram are the most used social media platforms today and by having business pages in these platforms can help your business reach more people and be more known to the market. As mentioned above, people use social media in keeping up with current affairs but they also use social media to look for things that interest them or products and services they might need.

However, keep in mind that you will need to post contents relevant to your business so that people who might be looking for your services will be able to find you easily. For example, if you have a plumbing business you might want to post pictures or videos on how you fix plumbing issues.

  • Cheaper Advertising

Going on social media to advertise is a lot cheaper compared to traditional advertising via television, radio, or print media such as newspapers and magazines. Depending on your goal and the number of people you want to reach, you may spend just a small amount of the marketing budget in setting up a social media campaign via Facebook or Instagram and go higher when you see the need and the success it brings to your business.

Some businesses don’t even spend their budget on social media campaigns, instead, they just create interactive content that their audience likes and can share to their peers. This is called organic reach.

  • Community Management

While phone lines and company emails are still the top ways to contact a business, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are emerging when it comes to building relationships with clients, both potential and loyal ones. It is because community or social media managers can reply to any inquiry faster compared to the traditional ways of contacting a business. For instance, if a household encounters issues with their plumbing system, they can easily find a plumbing business on Facebook, and send media such as images or videos of the issue and the plumbing business can instantly reply to them with full knowledge on what the issue really is.

Through social media, it is also possible to keep your clients updated on what’s new in business, important updates, and promotions, etc.

  • Data Gathering

By going on social media, you will have a better understanding of your audience. Facebook and Instagram being 2 of the most comprehensive social media platforms for business owners can provide you a wider view of people interacting with your page. Aside from the basic demographic characteristics of your audience such as their location, age, and gender, they can also provide you with your audience’s interests, educational background, work, and other key factors that can help you understand your audience better and have more relatable content or messaging.
